Overview
The fascinating region begins at the southern edge of the High Atlas Mountains where the desert and mountains converge. The stony desert is interspersed with green oases abundant in date palms that provide a cool respite from the scorching sun. The area is characterized by steep canyons, arid hills, and wadis that traverse the region right up to the fringes of the Sahara. The bright light and vibrant colors make this region a feast for the senses.
Important Note: Please note that the Zagora desert features small, white dunes and is a rocky desert. For the best desert experience in Morocco with the largest and highest sand dunes, we recommend visiting Big Zagora Desert Dunes or Erg Chigaga Sand Dunes in the Merzouga Desert. Day to Day tour itinerary:
Day 1: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains – Zagora Camel Ride & Camping (355 km)
Depart in the morning from Marrakech to Zagora, passing through the High Atlas Mountains and over the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260m). The views over the valleys and Berber villages perched on the mountain sides are spectacular. After passing Ouarzazate, descend into the Draa Valley and stop for lunch in Agdez. From there, follow the ancient road of caravans between the mountains and the river until reaching Zagora and the door of the Sahara. Take a camel ride to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner in the Nakhla dunes at the bivouac of nomad tents, where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Zagora Desert – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Marrakech (377 km)
Wake up early to catch the sunrise and enjoy the wonderful play of shadows across the sand. After breakfast, return from the dunes of Nakhla to Zagora on camelback. Drive north to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou for lunch and a scheduled visit. In the afternoon, return to Marrakech, arriving by the end of the afternoon.
