Three days, out and back to Ouarzazate
This is the shorter of our two Erg Chegaga tours from Ouarzazate. Three days, two nights in desert camps, returning to Ouarzazate on the final afternoon. It covers the Draa Valley, the Erg Lihoudi dunes, and the big dunes at Erg Chegaga — 300 metres high and the largest in Morocco — with around 165 km of off-road driving across the two desert days.
The route is a loop: down the Draa caravan road to M’hamid, camel trek into Erg Lihoudi for the first night, across to Erg Chegaga for the second, then back through Iriqui lake and Foum Zguid to Ouarzazate. You are in the desert on both nights, which is the point of the trip.
Choosing between our two Ouarzazate Chegaga tours: this 3-day version returns straight to Ouarzazate on the last day. The 4-day version follows the same desert route but adds a night at Ait Ben Haddou and a final day through Skoura oasis and the Dades Gorges. Take the 3-day if your time is tight; take the 4-day if you want the kasbahs as well as the dunes.

Day tour itinerary
Day 1: Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Zagora – M’hamid – Erg Lihoudi dunes
Morning departure from Ouarzazate to M’hamid and the Dunes of Erg Lihoudi passing by the Anti-Atlas and Agdez, where the Dra’a valley starts, with a short stop for a tea break. Later, we drive off-road along the Dra’a valley’s ancient caravan route as far as Zagora for lunch. In the afternoon, the route continues to M’hamid which marks the end of the paved road and the beginning of the Sahara desert. Here an hour camel ride leads to the highest dune to enjoy an unforgettable sunset and to spend the beauty of the night in a desert camp close to the dunes of Erg Lihoudi.
Day 2: Erg Lihoudi dunes – Erg Chegaga
If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise. After breakfast, the return from the dunes of Erg Lihoudi to M’hamid for lunch is on camel back and, in the afternoon, is the departure for the dunes of Chegaga with 65km of off-road driving. This route passes different features of the desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’, oases. The sunset from the top of Erg Chegaga is spectacular (300m) and afterwards there is dinner and the night in a desert camp.
Day 3: Erg Chegaga – Iriqui lake – fossils – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Ouarzazate
Sunrise over the dunes if you are awake for it, then breakfast and the long drive home. This is the day that separates the 3-day tour from the 4-day: rather than continuing north to the kasbahs, we head straight back to Ouarzazate across another 100km of off-road desert — dunes, the dry bed of Iriqui lake, mountains and fossil beds. Lunch at Foum Zguid, then paved road through Taznakht, known for its Berber carpets, arriving in Ouarzazate by late afternoon. You are back in the city the same day, which makes this the tour to choose if you have a flight or an onward connection to catch.
