Overview
This 4-day trip from Marrakech to Erg Chebbi follows the same southern route as our 3-day Merzouga tour but adds a full extra day, so the long return leg is split in two and you spend more time at each stop rather than driving through them. Day one covers 322 km over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to the Dades gorges, with the kasbah of Amridil in the Skoura oasis and the valley of the roses at Kela’a M’gouna along the way.
Day two brings you through the Todra gorges and the Ziz valley to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, where a one-hour camel trek leads to the desert camp. Days three and four then return west through Rissani, Agdez and Ouarzazate with an overnight stop, instead of the single long drive that a 3-day tour requires. If your schedule is tighter, compare the 3-day Merzouga version of this route.
Day to Day tour itinerary
Morning departure from Marrakesh to the Dades gorges crossing the High Atlas mountains. From these mountains, the views over the valleys and the berber villages perched on the mountain sides, sometimes barely distinguishable from the mountains themselves, are spectacular. Having crossed the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, you continue to descend until you finally reach Ouarzazate where you stop for lunch. In the afternoon, the road continues to the oasis of Skoura where we stop to visit the kasbah of Amridil. From here, the route takes us through Kela’a M’gouna, the valley of the roses and the road of a thousand kasbahs. You stop in the Dades gorges in a hotel by the end of the day for spending the night.
After breakfast, we visit the Atlas Film Studios. Driving north, you leave the main road and take a side road to the kasbah of Ait ben Haddou for a visit (Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous Kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also well-known as being the backdrop to many Hollywood blockbusters). The road then continues along the valley of Ounila with beautiful and prosperous villages, stunning mountains and views to Telouet, where you will stop to visit the kasbah of Telouet and have lunch. We reach Marrakesh by the early evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the extra day add compared to the 3-day tour?
The 4-day version covers the same highlights but splits the long return drive across two days, with an additional overnight stop near Ouarzazate. That means shorter daily driving times and more time to visit kasbahs and gorges properly rather than passing them quickly.
Is this tour suitable for families?
Yes. Erg Chebbi is reached on paved roads and the extra day reduces daily driving, which makes this route more comfortable for children and older travellers than the 3-day option.
When is the best time for this tour?
The best time to visit the Sahara desert is from September to May. Daytime temperatures are pleasant for walking in the gorges and on the dunes, while desert nights are cold in winter, so pack warm layers for December to February. Our guide to the best time to visit Morocco has a month-by-month breakdown.
What is included in the desert camp?
A nomad tent, dinner and breakfast, a sunset climb of the dunes and a one-hour camel trek to reach the camp at Erg Chebbi.
Can this tour be customised?
