Morocco Travel FAQ

Answers to the questions travellers ask us most, from visas and money to booking your private tour.

Morocco stretches from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, with imperial cities, the Atlas mountains and the Atlantic coast in between. Here are clear answers to help you plan your trip with confidence.

Before You Go

Citizens of the EU, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after your arrival. Entry rules can change, so check with the Moroccan embassy in your country before you travel.

Yes. Morocco is one of the safest countries in North Africa for travellers. Take the usual precautions in busy medinas, agree taxi fares before you ride and dress modestly outside beach areas. On our private tours your driver stays with you throughout the trip.

The Moroccan dirham (MAD). It is difficult to buy outside Morocco, so most travellers change cash or use an ATM on arrival; ATMs are easy to find in towns and cities. Cards are accepted in most hotels and larger restaurants, but carry cash for souks, small cafés and tips.

Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) are the official languages, and French is widely spoken. English is common in hotels and tourist areas, and your driver will help you communicate along the way.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for most of the country. For the Sahara, travel between September and May, as summer days in the desert are very hot. See our climate and seasons guide.

Two days are enough for a desert trip to Zagora from Marrakech, and three days are the minimum for the big dunes of Merzouga. To combine the imperial cities, the Sahara and Marrakech, plan 7 to 10 days.

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco’s highest golden dunes and is reached by paved road. Erg Chigaga is wilder and quieter, reached by a desert track. Zagora is the closest desert to Marrakech, ideal for a 2-day trip, but its dunes are small.
