Overview
The old medina: Madrasa, garden and markets
This half day walk covers the quieter, older half of the medina. The Ben Youssef Madrasa was a Quranic college for six centuries and is the finest interior in Marrakech. Le Jardin Secret, a few streets away, is a riad garden restored on its original Islamic plan and the calmest place in the old city. Between and after them, the souks.
The order matters: we do the Madrasa early while it is quiet, the garden as a break, then the markets as they come alive. Your guide walks the working lanes the dyers, the ironmongers, the woodworkers rather than the tourist run, and handles the haggling if you want to buy something.
Entry fees for the madrasa and the garden are paid at each site on the day. Bring cash in dirhams.
Walking tour itinerary
Meeting point Your guide meets you at your riad or hotel in Marrakech. If your riad is deep inside the medina and hard to find, we agree a nearby landmark when you book.
Ben Youssef Madrasa We start here, early, while it is still quiet. A Quranic college for six centuries and one of the largest in North Africa, with zellij tilework, carved cedar and stucco that took years to complete. The central courtyard is the most photographed interior in Marrakech; the student cells upstairs explain how the place actually worked, and most visitors walk straight past them.
Le Jardin Secret A few streets south. A riad garden restored on its original Islamic four-part plan, with the old hydraulic system that watered it still visible. It is the quietest place in the medina and a useful break before the markets.
Into the souks From the garden we enter the covered markets. These are organised by trade, as they have been for centuries: Souk Semmarine for textiles and leather, Souk El Attarine for spices, then the lanes for lanterns, wool and babouches. We walk the main arteries and several quieter side lanes most visitors never find.
Artisan workshops We stop where people are actually working: the dyers’ souk, the ironmongers, a carpenter or coppersmith. There is no obligation to buy anything at any point.
Finish The walk ends at Jemaa el-Fnaa as it begins to fill. Your guide points out which food stalls are worth returning to after dark, or walks you back to your riad if you prefer.
